Completely agree with the spirit of what you are saying. (But I fail at the execution of drinking sickingly sweet wines.) I suppose that makes me a snob although I struggle with this "label". There are a lot of inexpensive wines that are not manufactured wines that I will gladly drink! They are correct but just have a super short finish and will not age! I am down with that! There! Not a snob, right? 🙏🤔

I love this! I have so many incredible memories with bad wine involved, even ice served in rosé wines at fancy beach clubs in France.... I wouldn’t change it.

With you there! We spent many summers in France drinking wine we’d picked up by the ‘cubi’ (5 litre plastic bottle for those who are not familiar with the term) from the local. Co-op for just over a euro a litre. It was light (probably about 11%), refreshing and just what you needed on a sweltering hot day, especially at lunchtime!

I've often wanted to try the wine 'en vrac' - out of those petrol pump things you see at co-ops.

Very true , but cheap wine isn’t necessarily bad , it’s a commercial beverage made in vast quantities to meet the needs of less discriminating peasants like me . There are plenty of such wines in Portugal where I live . When I choose to drink a more prestigious wine I appreciate it more . Of course the real pleasure of wine is the endless diversity .

Of course, if you confine yourself to only drinking very good wine you miss out on all those bars in Europe - particularly Spain - where you have a choice of red or white while enjoying whatever their speciality is. Having spent nearly 20 years drinking at bars in Melbourne where as wine became finer, quantities became smaller (100ml sometimes) and prices rose, it is refreshing now to be in Johannesburg where often the standard pour is 250ml for under £4 of what I would describe as a serviceable table wine to wash down my steak/ribs/peri peri/prawns or disgusting cream based pasta dish.
