I'll be trying your mineral water–lime-bitters interlude; sounds excellent. But really I think not having a lock-in at the pub with old friends on Christmas Eve is the single biggest trick for me, and though it's a loss, it's a loss like thinning hair that comes naturally with age.

Dixit is a great family card game for older teens and adults.You take turns to deal out some of the 80 arty lovely ambiguous cards and the dealer has to describe their card in a word,phrase,diagram,song etc.

If some of the players get it right ,the dealer and them get points.If no one gets it or everyone gets it the dealer gets no points.Easy to learn,easy to play,no arguments over the winner in about 40 minutes of zero embarrassment play.

Endlessly inventive and good as an antidote to too much port!
