Before we get on with today’s post I just want to say a particular thank you to all paid subscribers. There’s been a flurry of new ones in the past couple of weeks which means I can devote more time to the Substack. In future, more posts will be paid only. One of the strangest gigs I've had as a freelance writer was being sent to Paris in May to interview Carla Bruni for Decanter magazine. That's because Bruni, like so many other famous people, now has her own brand of rosé. Rather than just team up with Gérard Bertrand like Jon Bon Jovi did or Benchmark Drinks like Kylie, she's done things the hard way by buying a château and employing a crack squad to make her wine.

Not celeb rose…

The following week, I was on Times Radio trying to explain why rosé has become so popular at a time when other forms of wine were declining. The presenter put it down to the 'Kylie Effect' but I think it's the other way round: we aren't buying rosé because Kylie has her own brand, Kylie has her own brand because we are buying rosé.
